Person of the Year

 

What makes a person someone we look up to? What characteristics do our heroes and admired people have in common? Why do we find these characteristics appealing?

Take a look at the TIME Person of the Year archive. This list is a compilation of people who were chosen as Person of the Year since 1927! Read about some of these people and think about why they were chosen.

With a partner, compile a list of characteristics or qualities that you think these people have in common. It might be that they are leaders or are compassionate. Create a list that has at least ten characteristics that you feel represent a person worthy of being Person of the Year.

 

Your Task

Now that you have a better idea of what characteristics a Person of the Year possesses, brainstorm people that you think represent those characteristics. You might choose an athlete, actor, musician, government official, teacher, parent, coach or other relevent person. Maybe even a teen who is doing something great.

Once you choose a person, you will begin researching them. If you choose a person who is not famous, like a teacher, parent, coach or teen, you will need to interview them to gather research.

Use the note card format for collecting your research. Check out this example for more information on how to use the note cards. While you are collecting notes, be sure to keep track of your resources with the MLA Citation Maker Tracking Sheet. You will need this sheet when you create your citations using the OSLIS Citation Maker.

Project Requirements

You will need to create a one page document presenting your research. Your document should incorporate the desktop publishing skills we have worked on. You may create your document in Microsoft Word or with Microsoft Publisher, if it is available.

  • Proportion refers to size and importance
  • Balance text and graphics
  • Use eyes
  • Think about serifs and sans serifs
